Savour the wholesome goodness of homemade black bean burgers packed with plant-based protein and rich, smoky flavours. Made with mashed black beans, oats, grated carrots, and warming spices, these patties are pan-seared to perfection, delivering a crisp exterior and a tender and flavourful bite. Served on toasted whole-grain buns, each burger is layered with fresh lettuce, juicy tomato, onion and a slice of low-fat cheese all complemented by a creamy paneer sauce that adds a deliciously tangy twist. Burgers are paired with baked sweet potato fries, seasoned with smoked paprika and garlic, this meal is both nutrient-dense and satisfying and a guilt-free indulgence.

Ingredients

For the Burgers:

  • Boiled black beans – 500g
  • Tomato – 1 no. 
  • Onion – 1 no. 
  • Lettuce – 1 no. 
  • Breadcrumbs – 125g
  • Cornflour – 2 tbsp
  • Rolled oats – 60g
  • Grated carrots – 60g
  • Smoked paprika – 1 tsp
  • Garlic powder – 1 tsp
  • Cumin – ½ tsp 
  • Salt – ½ tsp
  • Black pepper – ½ tsp 
  • Whole grain burger buns – 4 nos. 
  • Low-fat cheese – 4 nos. 


For Sauce:

  • Paneer – 250g
  • Curd – 60g
  • Milk – 60g
  • Paprika powder – 1 tsp
  • Salt – To taste


For sweet potato fries:

  • Sweet potatoes – 2 nos. large
  • Olive oil – 1 tbsp
  • Smoked paprika – 1 tsp
  • Garlic powder – ½ tsp
  • Salt – ¼ tsp 
  • Black pepper – ¼ tsp

Instructions

For the fries: 

  • Preheat the oven to 220°C. 
  • Cut the sweet potatoes into long strips. Toss the sweet potato strip with olive oil, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.  
  • On a baking tray, place the baking sheet and lay the potatoes in a single layer. 
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and crisp. 


For black bean patties:

  • In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork until coarse.
  • Add breadcrumbs, oats, grated carrots, cornflour, paprika, garlic powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix it well. 
  • Divide the mixture into small equal portions and shape them into patties. 
  • Heat a pan on medium flame. Add olive oil and cook the patties for 5 minutes on each side until golden brown. 


For sauce:

  • In a blender, add the grated paneer, milk, and curd. Blend it to a smooth paste. 
  • Transfer it to a bowl and add paprika powder and salt. 
  • Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. 


Assemble the burger:

  • Cut the burgers into 2 halves and toast them in a pan. 
  • Spread 1 spoon of the paneer sauce on the bottom of the bun. 
  • Add the lettuce, bean patty, a slice of cheese, tomato slices, and onion slices and top it with the other half of the bun. 
  • Serve it with baked sweet potato fries on the side.

Healthy Tips & Facts

  • You can use gluten-free buns. 
  • Add chopped cilantro, green onions, mushrooms, and bell pepper for extra flavour. 
  • Soak sweet potato strips in cold water for 30 minutes before baking to make them crispier. 
  • You can also add avocado pieces on top of bean patties. 
  • You either use an air fryer or a baking method for cooking the patties.
